I've wanted to read Parting Gifts for some time, but didn't want to pay the out of print price. Thank goodness Heath's once out of print historicals are now being re-released on Kindle because I finally got my chance!This book was amazing.
Heath is known for her ability to tug at heart strings and write some profound tear-jerkers, and Parting Gifts is certainly "one of those".
A widower, Charles Lawson rescues Maddie from a brothel where she is about to surrender her body to the highest bidder. He outbids everyone and offers to marry her in exchange for her help with running his inn and raising his children. She readily accepts. She expects to be Charles's wife and mother to his children, but she doesn't count on developing feelings for Charles's older brother Jesse.
I didn't know how to feel about a book with 2 heroes. I usually would be put off by this plot line, but the characters are written with such skill and transparency that I was captivated. This book has a bit of everything. Romance, suspense, and angst. I grew to care about all the characters in this book, and I felt "invested" in the outcome of this book. The ending was so touching and sweet that I will remember this book forever. Highly recommended.

Ms. Heath always brings a unique twist in her stories. It engages her readers with her story line and the dynamics brought about by her characters. Parting Gift is a story of two brothers---I consider both the heroes of the story. Ms. Heath weaves the characteristics of these two men in such a way that readers would love. A story of self-sacrifice and family love above all else.

While I have been moved by many novels through the years, I literally found myself weeping at the poignancy in this lovely story. Heath masterfully conveys the love of two brothers, a father and his children, and a man and a woman. All interact beautifully. How Lorraine Heath combines joy, laughter, and tears makes PARTING GIFTS a must-read for any lover of historical romance.
The most amazing story. All of the characters were so well done. Felt like I knew them all. Each and every one of them had depth, which so many authors either fail to show or exaggerate until the character seems phony.
A real story of love. All kinds of love. Amazing. I wish I could rate it higher than a 5.
I read my last copy of this book to pieces! It’s a sweet story and one of my favorite rereads so I was happy to find it as it’s out of print. Came in great shape. Doesn’t look like it has ever been read. The thing that kept me from giving five stars was the price since the sticker from the seller indicated it had been in the 3 for $5 bin and I paid more than $5 bucks for the one book but I’m still satisfied.
This is a love story that is gentle and then passionate. It is a story of a loving family growing into a larger loving family. I like the people in this family very much and enjoyed reading about their journey. If you are looking for a HEA then this book delivers.
This has to be the sweetest romance story I have ever read. However, I use the word "sweetest" not to describe the romantic couple but to describe a secondary character, Charles. Charles has a terminal illness and leaves "gifts" to those he loves, and he loves to the Nth degree! I completely agree with all the other 5-star reviews THIS IS A MUST READ!
What an amazing story!! I have been a fan of Lorraine Heath's writing since reading her Texas series. I was reluctant to pay the high price for this hard to find book, but gave in and did. After reading it, I would have paid even more!! Rarely has a story touched me as much as this one did. Charles Lawson, a widower who loved his late wife very much, wanted to find a woman who would raise his children and love them as a Mother would. He found that in Maddie, when he rescued the desperate girl from giving herself to the highest bidder in a Texas brothel. He marries Maddie and takes her home to the Inn that he shares with his 3 young children and his older brother Jesse, a retired Texas Ranger. From that point on, you get lost in this story full of secrets, suprises, and a dying man's gifts to his beloved family. This book had an unusual situation with having two heros, but was tastefully written and beautifully carried out. This story is a must read, and is sure to find it's way onto your keeper shelf and into your heart!
