In the last days of World War II, a sailor discovers a transcontinental conspiracy

Trouble Follows Me eBook Ross Macdonald

Ross Macdonald is one of America's (although he was Canadian) greatest writers. Yes, he's a genre writer, which leads many people to pigeonhole him as "inferior" to more popular literary fiction writers. But while he writes page-turners with complex plots, vivid characters, and surprising turns, he is also a literary stylist. His descriptions of people and places is flawless, as is his sardonic take on the excesses of the filthy rich. To call him the heir of Hammet and Chandler understates his importance -- he is by far their superior. They might have got there first, but he exceeds the in all ways, from literary standards to dialogue that, unlike theirs, transcends period slang.

I have most of Macdonald'sThe Blue Hammer (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard) original cheapo paperback releases but even so, I want to replace them with these superb reissues -- well made with readable type.

Trouble Follows Me eBook Ross Macdonald Reviews

Great!
Good read, but I like the Lew Archer series better .Looking forward to reading more of those.
Excellent book. Fast paced yet takes time to flesh out the characters and the scene. The train sequence is perfectly rendered. The plot is convoluted but it all hangs together and is not reliant on cheap shortcuts.

Macdonald's Archer books were great but the last 10 or so were basically the same book over and over. "Trouble Follows Me" is not in the Archer mold in terms of plot devices and is quite unpredictable.

For my money the four early Macdonald books ( Blue City, The Three Roads, The Dark Tunnel, Trouble Follows Me) were all outstanding and represent Macdonald before he got so focused on the Lew Archer format. The writing was fresh, earthy, and real.

"Trouble Follows Me" will transport you back to the early 1940's and give you a taste of what life in the U.S. was like during WWII.
This wartime story of murder and betrayal was written by Ross Macdonald early in his literary career. Before he completely found his voice as a novelist and when he was still known by his given name of Kenneth Millar.

Ensign Sam Drake, an erstwhile journalist, serves the dual role of narrator and protagonist. Chapter one finds Sam on shore leave in Hawaii. It's February, 1945.

As Sam and his fellow naval officers enjoy themselves at a party, one of the female party attendees is found dead. Is it murder or suicide? And if it's murder does it have anything to do with matters of national security. These questions continue to plague Sam as he travels stateside.

In typical Ross Macdonald fashion, the plot takes a very complicated trajectory. Black white racial discord, the 1937 rape of Nanking, fine nuances of cryptography and the Tiajuana sex trade all have a part to play as the convoluted narrative unfolds.

Fans of Ross Macdonald will certainly want to read this early entry in the Macdonald canon. The richly descriptive brand of prose the author is famous for can be found in abundance. But much of the dialogue in Trouble Follows Me is stilted and generally lacks the zing found in many of the later Lew Archer mysteries. Moreover, there is too much reliance on coincidence to suit me.

Suffice it to say that Trouble Follows Me is an easy, interesting read that fails to satisfy in the way that Macdonald's later novels do. But the hint of greatness soon to come is there.
I enjoyed this vintage crime drama. Not as good as some other ROSS MACDONALD mysteries. It was a little too predicable.
As bad as 'The Three Roads' is as a novel, that's how good this is. Excellent early RM.
